Morning Inspiration with Pastor Merritt
When a person comes to faith in Jesus Christ, though at the time that person may not realize it, the Holy Spirit of God comes into that person’s life and takes up residence. From that moment on, what God wants is simply for that Christian to walk in the Spirit, live by the Spirit and let the Spirit of God bear fruit through his or her life. Part of that fruit is goodness. Contrary to what a lot of people think goodness is not feeling good, looking good or even primarily, at first, doing good. It is first being good that then causes us to start doing good.
The fact that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit of God tells us something. Goodness can only come from God. It is not something that you can manufacture. It is something that only God can give. I am going to make two statements that just honestly if you are into the politically correct way of thinking may leave you somewhere between totally ticked off and hyperventilating. Apart from God, there is no such thing as goodness. Apart from God, there is no one who is good or does good. Romans 3:12 says,
“There is no one who does good, not even one.”
In fact, if you take the word “God” out of the word “good” all you are left with is a big, fat “0”.
