iPhone Won't Dump Lightning

Why the iPhone Won't Dump Lightning for USB-C Even Though the iPad Pro Did

Rumors suggested the new iPhone might have a USB Type-C port, but it's not looking likely.

Earlier this year, reports suggested that Apple might kill its proprietary Lightning port by transitioning its next iPhone over to the USB Type-C port that virtually all Android devices (and some computers, including new Apple MacBooks) use. Such a move would be a cross-compatible dream come true, and the beginning of the end of Apple's dongle-based hellscape.

Apple Plans Gaming Subscription Service: Sources

By Alex Heath

Apple is planning a subscription service for games, according to five people familiar with the matter.

The service would function like Netflix for games, allowing users who pay a subscription fee to access a bundled list of titles. Apple ($AAPL) began privately discussing a subscription service with game developers in the second half of 2018, said the people, all of whom requested anonymity to discuss unannounced plans.

On Wednesday afternoon, CEO Tim Cook issued a letter to Apple shareholders, warning them that the once-trillion-dollar company's first quarter revenue is actually going to be a bit lower than originally expected. Cook lays out a bunch of reasons, including a slowing market in China and the effects of international exchange rates. But all of these factors trace back to something a bit more straightforward: Fewer people are buying new iPhones, which, of course they are.

By Erin Pearson

A Melbourne private schoolboy who repeatedly broke into Apple’s secure computer systems is facing criminal charges after the technology giant called in the FBI.

The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, broke into Apple’s mainframe from his suburban home on multiple occasions over a year because he was such a fan of the company, according to his lawyer.

Greedy Apple

The greedy ways Apple got to $1 trillion

Josh Constine@joshconstine

For being the richest company ever with $243 billion in cash, Apple sure cuts corners in the stingiest ways. The hardware giant became the first trillion-dollar company this week. Yet it’s tough to reconcile Apple earning $11 billion in profit per quarter with it still screwing us over on cords and keyboards. The “it just works” philosophy has slipped through the cracks of the money-printing machine. It’s not that Apple  couldn’t afford to fix the problems, it’s just ensnared in hubris such that it doesn’t see them as important.

OK Google, we get it. You are smarter than the other assistants.

This has been the subtext of recent Google I/O developer conferences. The latest edition kicked off Tuesday in Mountain View, Calif., where the Internet giant showed off how its Assistant, available on phones and its smart speaker Google Home line, was getting more adept at mimicking human conversation.

Leaked iPhone pics

Leaked iPhone pics show glass back and headphone jack

Matt Burns@mjburnsy
iphone-se-2

The headphone jack could still have a future in an iPhone. These leaked pics show an iPhone SE 2 with a glass back and headphone jack. Like the current iPhone SE, the design seems to be a take on the classic iPhone 5. I dig it.

The leak also states the upcoming device sports wireless charging, which puts it in line with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

Rumors have long stated that Apple  was working on an updated iPhone SE. The original was released in March 16 and updated a year later with improved specs. With a 4-inch screen, the iPhone SE is the smallest iPhone Apple offers and also the cheapest.

WWDC in early June is the next major  Apple event and could play host for the launch of this phone. Last month, around the iPhone SE’s birthday, Apple held a special event in a Chicago school to launch an education-focused iPad. It’s logical that Apple pushed the launch of this new iPhone SE to WWDC to give the iPad event breathing room.

While Apple cut the headphone jack from its flagship devices, the SE looks to retain the connection. It makes sense. The low-cost iPhone is key for Apple in growing markets across the world where the last two models helped grow iOS’s market penetration. This is Apple’s low-cost offering and thus suggests Apple doesn’t expect buyers to also spring for its wireless earbuds.

If released at WWDC or later in the year, the iPhone SE looks to serve consumers who enjoy smaller phones with headphone jacks. That’s me.

Apple's next iPhones

Apple's next iPhones might be bigger and cheaper

Two of Apple's upcoming iPhone models will have dual SIM functionality, report claims.

BY STAN SCHROEDER

Apple plans to launch two 6.1-inch iPhones, one of which will be a dual-SIM phone, a first for Apple.

This is according to reliable leaker of all things Apple, Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), who says the dual-SIM, 6.1-inch variant of the phone could be priced at $650 to $750, while the single SIM model will cost $550 to $650.

By HALLIE DETRICK

Apple is reportedly developing its own screens, and the news is hurting the company’s suppliers.

Apple currently uses screens manufactured by companies including Samsung Electronics, Japan Display, Sharp, and LG Display. According to Bloomberg, several of these suppliers suffered in the Asian markets after Apple’s development plans were reported. Japan Display was down as much as 4.4%, Sharp 3.3%, and Samsung 1.4%. However, Apple shares were also down 1.3% in early trading in New York.
