Devotional

READ Romans 8:9-14
"However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."
Let's just start there…you, me, your friends, your family. If we don’t start there, we are all compasses pointed in the wrong direction. One of my favorite movies back in the day was Pirates of the Caribbean…at least until they got to the third movie which was a disaster. One of my favorite moments in the movie is when the character played by Orlando Bloom starts asking questions of Jack’s friend about the compass. The character says: “How does he know where he’s going if that compass doesn’t point North?” The response is epic…“aye mate, but we aren’t trying to find North are we?”

Ever get that feeling? That maybe we’re headed in a completely different direction than the rest of the world? Yeah me too. We all come from the same place though….we’ve all sinned and we’ve all fallen short.  The question is, where do we go from there? I think that truly depends on your compass. If you want to end up on the same path as the world…a path that leads to destruction, earthly pleasures, and emptiness…just keep following the same compass as everyone else. Let your north star be money, power, greed, lust, arrogance, anger, malice, (in other words…yourself) you will find yourself broken and lonely. What if we use a fixed point, never moving, never changing…an ever present help in our time of need? Might I submit to you that we would find our way to a different destination than the world. Maybe our navigation would be a more enjoyable experience and maybe we would find our way to a treasure that this world cannot contain?

My prayer for you today is that you wouldn’t seek what the world seeks. Let us live according to the Spirit and remember that our path will be “unusual” to the casual observer. It may even seem completely off base BUT we are the SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF GOD.
