BECAUSE: It's official: Jon Snow is dead, and the news that HBO has been trying to warn us about for months hit everyone pretty hard... but did it hit you "age a couple centuries and crawl under the covers" hard? The Game of Thrones season 6 premiere, "The Red Lady," devoted its last and most shocking scene to its titular character, Melisandre. Fearful of the seemingly false visions shown to her by the Lord of Light, and mourning the death of everyone's broody fave Jon Snow, the beautiful priestess retreats to her room, takes off her choker, and takes a nice, long look at her true nude form...that ofan incredibly old woman, ravaged and weakened by time and/or dwindling faith.

WHAT HAPPENED: But tough as it was, Game of Thrones' season 6 premiere -- the one EW recapper James Hibberd calls the series' best premiere yet -- was less about the death of Jon Snow, and more about the beloved (and be-hated) characters who survived the long hiatus. So let's just take 'em one at a time, shall we: The boys at Castle Black are pretty peeved once they learn that Alliser Throne killed their Lord Commander, but its Davos "The Man" Seaworth, Ghost, and a few good men who are protecting Jon's body and trying to get word to the Wildlings that they're going to need a hand. In King's Landing, Jaime finally arrives back to Cersei with news that her daughter is dead and a new unofficial slogan for House Lannister: "F -- k everyone who isn't us." Jaime doesn't know it yet, but in Dorne, Ellaria Sand just organized the murder of Prince Doran and little Trystane via the Sand Snakes. In other royals-in-peril news, while Tyrion and Varys try to hold down the Targaryen fort in Meereen, Daenerys is still a captive of the Dothraki, though Jorah is hot (and grey) on her tail. Once they realize she is a Khal's widow -- or rather once she fiercely informs them so -- though, they tell her she won't be harmed... just sent to some weird widow house. And Arya over in Braavos could probably tell her that going to mystery houses will only lead to becoming a blind street beggar with an occasional appointment to get beaten with a stick by the Waif.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: Are we forgetting anyone? Oh, right -- SANSAAAA. While Dany made some facial expressions to kill, the most badass scene of the premiere must go to Brienne and Pod swooping in to defend Sansa and Theon in their escape from Ramsey's hounds, finally fulfilling Brienne's oath to Catelyn -- and via Oathkeeper, no less! Speaking with EW, actor Gwendoline Christie said, "I found it very touching ... I have so many fond memories of working with Michelle Fairley [Catelyn Stark]. This is a mirror of that oath and this time Sansa accepts it and she can see how dedicated Brienne is to her." And on a storytelling level, director Jeremy Podeswa told us of Brienne's heroic rescue, "It's great when you can marry something that has a lot of action with something that's quite emotional ... Theon shows his own agency and protects Sansa, you get to see Brienne throwing down a charging horse with her bare arms, and then there's [the oath]." Indeed, then there's the oath -- just think of the oath when your mind starts to wander to the Sand Snakes or Melisandre's sad crone face.

Once Upon a Time
ABC
WHAT HAPPENED: Blood is thicker than water on Once Upon a Time... even water from the magical memory-zapping River Lethe. Sunday's episodedredges up Regina and Zelena's past by bringing Mama Cora back into the mix to try and stop Z from running off with Hades (and, y'know, leaving everyone else is hell). Cora's plan is to rid Zelena of all of her memories of Hades using water from the River Lethe. It's a little trick she's used once before, as we see in flashback, to rid Regina and Zelena of the knowledge that they were sisters who loved each other very much as children. Not cool, Mom. Feeling a little bad about it, Cora confesses and restores the sisters' memories, and everyone is thrilled to love each other all over again. Well, thrilled until Rumple and his dad Peter Pan drop a bag over Zelena's head as the start of a revenge plan for her giving Belle that sleeping curse idea.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: Yes to Regina-and-Zelena -- all the Regina-and-Zelena, please! And everything that comes with them. The A.V. Club points out that from the child actors in the flashbacks, to the episode's thoughtful familial themes, to Cora's journey, this was one of season 3's best tales: "It's hard to top the kind of character transformation that Cora has this episode. She appears as her most villainous, separating two little girls who love each other, and her most benevolent, bringing them together again. Her confession that she wanted to save Regina from love because it brought weakness, even helps explain a lot about Regina's prior behavior. Barbara Hershey somehow pulls this all off with equal parts of malice and compassion, resulting in a scene that's out-and-out tear-inducing, a rarity for OUAT." Let your tear flag fly, OUAT.

The Good Wife
CBS
WHAT HAPPENED: Nothing says P-A-R-T-Y like surprise engagements, Martian real estate, and funeral flowers -- at least not on The Good Wife. And as EW recapper Sara Netzley says, "For an episode with no case of the week, this hour was stuffed full of plots and characters and all kinds of goodness." To hit the most central plots, Sunday's episode saw Alicia throwing a shindig for the affianced Jackie and Howard, but wine and flowers are really the least of her worries. Turns out, Zach got engaged to Hannah and is planning to drop out of school and move to Paris with her; and in other relocation news, Jason decided to give Alicia a sort of joke gift of a deed to 500 acres on Mars at the same moment she's decided she's ready to go the distance with him.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: In their recap, TVLine says, "Please tell me I'm not the only one who spent the last five minutes of this week's Good Wifeepisode clutching the couch in horror, worried Alicia and Peter might wind up having another one of those commitment-free quickies to which they've grown so fond, or at least accustomed." TVLine was not alone, and we can all be grateful that the combination of Peter and Alicia finally being well and truly ready for their divorce, and Alicia and Jason settling on the fact that they both want each other now and in the future for preventing any unfortunate hanky-panky. But TVLine has one more question about that Jason development: "How's a lawyer with national name recognition supposed to make a living while living all loosey-goosey and devil-may-care?" Eh, what's another bar exam or two when you're in scruffy, leather jacket-wearing luv?

Some Familiar Faces Fear the Walking Dead
AMC
STRAND-ED: Well, hey there Flight 462. Fear the Walking Dead made good on the promise that someone from the webisodes that aired during commercial breaks on The Walking Dead would make their way onto the show on Sunday night, but who could have guessed an entire episode would be set around the Flight 462 survivors? Probably not Strand, for one...
