Quentin Tarantino clarifies speculation about next movie

Quentin Tarantino doesn’t want fans getting the wrong idea about his upcoming movie.
“It’s not Charles Manson, it’s 1969,” he told IndieWire‘s Anne Thompson at a post-screening brunch held over the weekend in honor of Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled. Earlier this year, it was reported that Tarantino’s ninth feature would revolve around the Manson family murders, which included the slaying of actress Sharon Tate and supermarket executive Leno LaBianca on a two-night killing spree in August 1969. His comments suggest the project is more of a period piece versus a full-fledged Manson-centric biopic.
Tarantino is also seeking a new distribution partner for the untitled project, after distancing himself from disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein, who worked with the Oscar-winning filmmaker to produce and release several of his most prominent titles including Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Django Unchained, both parts of the Kill Bill series, and Tarantino’s most recent film, 2015’s The Hateful Eight — before a New York Times exposé detailed numerous sexual misconduct allegations against him.
Thompson notes Tarantino, who finished the script roughly five months ago, last week fronted a round of pitch meetings with five studios regarding worldwide distribution for the movie, which is rumored to include Margot Robbie as Tate, and returning Tarantino actors Brad Pitt (Inglorious Basterds) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained). If all goes according to plan, he will be ready to direct the film at the top of 2018.
“It’s a level playing field,” he told Thompson of choosing a new distribution partner. But as for who that might be, at this point Tarantino says: “I don’t know.”
