AT LEAST 34 people have been killed and 136 injured after three suicide explosions at Brussels airport and a metro station in attacks reportedly orchestrated by Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists.
At least 14 people have been killed and another 81 injured in the two large explosions at the airport, while 20 are dead and 55 have been injured – 10 of which are in a critical condition – after two blasts in Maelbeek metro station in Brussels.
Several people are still trapped in the Maelbeek metro station, confirmed Belgian health minister Maggie De Block.
A Belgian news agency also reported that witnesses had said they heard gunshots and shouts of Arabic at the time of the airport explosions fuelling fears that this may have been an attack inspired by islamic State (ISIS) terrorists.
Two men were later arrested a mile away from the Maelbeek metro station at around 11am, some two hours before the blasts tore the train apart.
Weapons have been found at the blast site at Zaventem airport, according to a Belgian news agency. The information has not yet been confirmed by an official source.
Three explosive devices have been recovered at the airport, one of which failed to detonate, according to Belgian media.
One explosion took place near Brussels Airlines while the other bomb detonated near the reception of American Airlines.
The large explosions have taken out glass windows at the entrance and much of the airport’s ceiling has collapsed.
The Belgian prosecutor’s office has now confirmed the attacks were suicide bombers.
The Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has slammed the attacks as “blind, violent, cowardly”.
Bloody aftermath of Brussels Metro attack
Alphonse Youla, who was working on a stand putting security wrapping around suitcases, said: ‘I heard a man shout some Arabic words then an explosion.. then a second explosion, a massive explosion, much bigger.
‘It was a horror. I saw at least seven people dead. There was blood. People had lost legs. You could see their bodies but no legs.’
Others described seeing ‘dismembered bodies everywhere’ and the ceiling collapsing after two blasts rocked the building.
Just 90 minutes later a blast hit a Metro blast hit the Maelbeek area of Brussels claiming another 20 lives.
Victims emerge from Brussels Metro station
Ralph Derrouich, who works at a restaurant in the airport, said: ‘The two explosions were almost simultaneous. They were both at check in desk. One was close to the Starbucks. It was awful. There was just blood. It was like the apocalypse.’
Dries Valaert, 30, was waiting to get his boarding pass from a check in desk.
He said: ‘There was a first blast and then ten seconds later a second explosion. It was a big big blast, the ceiling went down. It was just 30 metres from where I was. I saw people down on the ground and I just went running.
UPDATE: ISIS has claimed responsibility for the Brussels attack.
This is so sad. I am praying for the victims. I was stationed in Belgium for 3 years. The people there are so nice.
