The Catch Plays Cat-and-Mouse |
ABC |
BECAUSE: You know what they say: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer... like, really close... like, try to share a marriage certificate with your enemies. That's the premise of the new cat-and-mouse espionage drama, The Catch, produced by Shonda Rhimes. Mireille Enos plays Alice Vaughan, a private investigator trying to hunt down "Mr. X"; the reveal comes early on in Thursday's premiere that -- surprise! -- Mr. X is her fiancé Christopher (aka, the return of Peter Kraus, fittingly scored to Pitbull) and he just stole all her money and client data. The Catch is a subtler, more light-hearted affair than most of its "TGIT" sistren, and its best moment comes when the couple is finally reunited post-con and rather than a screaming match, or a brawl, or lighting someone on fire in the woods, the vengeful exes simply smolder gorgeously. You know that other thing they say: It's all about the foreplay. |

WHAT HAPPENED: Fresh meat alert -- please welcome to the Scandalstage, Alex Vargas, brother of wannabe president Frankie Vargas, and impressive stirrer of pots. As the plethora of potential presidential candidatesprepare for the first GOP debate (some by practicing... some by eating burgers), Alex pops onto the scene to bring out some key truths: First of all, the fact that Cyrus' place on Team Vargas isn't set in stone, and brother Alex has run all of his previous campaigns; plus, there's a new POTUS hopeful on the democratic side -- Olivia's ex, Sen. Edison Davis who seems to have the sketchy support of dynamic duo Rowan and Jake (update on Jake: still a tool). Following a breakdown of Mellie's public image, Olivia is convinced by Alex to give him dirt on Edison in exchange for something he knows about VP Susan Ross... we know Olivia told him about Edison's former painkiller addiction and rehab stint. But Susan Ross' skeleton in the closet? TBD. |
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: If you're having trouble keeping up with all the hats in the POTUS ring, EW's exclusive campaign posters for the five potential nominees might help you out. As for non-presidential newcomer Alex Vargas, actor Danny Pino told Variety, "Alex is out to make a point that nobody knows his brother better than him and nobody knows how to run a campaign for his brother better than him... To put it simply, he's not going to take any sh-t from Cyrus." Well then! But Alex isn't just playing defense either, he got the dirt on Edison Davis in exchange for some mysterious intel on Susan Ross, which Pino teased is "incredibly personal, and really goes to the core of who she is outside of the office of vice presidency." Prepare yourself Gladiators -- this fight just got dirty... well, dirtier. |

WHAT HAPPENED: Did things just get interesting on Idol? Wednesday night determines the final American Idol season's final four as we said goodbye to Sonika, but it also showed that bringing in two thoughtful industry powerhousesas mentors can bring out the very best in these eager young performers. Steven Van Zandt offered a much needed understanding of and connection to classic American rock, while Sia pushed the contestants out of their vocal comfort zones to be able to sing her tracks to their full capacity. Their earnest advice made Thursday's episode probably the farewell season's very best, and pushed La'Porsha Renae and especially Trent Harmon to heretofore unseen performance heights. |
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: So what about those performances? Trent managed to garner not one, but two A+ scores from TVLine, who called his performance of Z.Z. Top's "Sharp Dressed Man," " absolutely inspired ... he managed to pull off blues brother, Sinatra-esque crooner and '80s rocker...all in one 90-second performance." And while perhaps not quite as transcendent, La'Porsha also blew some minds in the classic rock round with a surprising Bon Jovi pick, "wrapping her vibrato and growl around the familiar melody" and just singing the fresh hell out of "Wanted Dead or Alive." MacKenzie and Dalton showed up and showed out as well, so perhaps we can finally all rest easy as the likelihood is good that our beloved American Idol will go out on a high note... maybe even a "swampy" one. |

WHAT HAPPENED: Believe it or not, a triple organ transplant was not the most dramatic thing going down on Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy.Amidst Meredith waffling on whether she could handle getting a drink with Will (ultimately she could, but they settle for fries instead) and Owen and Will furthering their feud, Jackson and April were finally addressing that small detail of her not telling him she was pregnant even though she knew before they got divorced. It was Arizona who spilled the beans to Jackson, and no matter how many different people she asks, the resounding conclusion is that was a very bad, bad thing to do. Jackson is furious to find out from someone else, and April tries to explain during many different sordid arguments that she didn't want him to stay because of the baby and end up hating her; Jackson explains that it's a little too late on that last bit. But Richard encourages him that the important thing to do now that he knows is step up, and while they make peace for, like, a moment, another misstep prompts April to say he "no rights here." YEESH. |
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: So, that was tough. And also a little daunting. But the A.V. Club, while they didn't find this to be a particularly good episode ofGrey's, found appreciation for "the smaller character interactions that pull onyears of shared history between both the characters and the audience alike." Mainly, our boy, Alex, and his deep understanding of Meredith after years and years of friendship to know that the only way to help her date is to act like dating again isn't that big of a deal. The A.V. Club points out, "The hotheaded lunkhead from the first few seasons has grown into arguably the most emotionally stable, emotionally attentive person at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. His slow evolution from obstinate intern to hyper-competent peds surgeon has been one of Grey's most subtly satisfying threads." You've done good, kid -- you've done good. |

CROSS! DOUBLE CROSS!: Alyssa really duped the contestants over bigtime in Thursday's Project Runway All Stars, first by limiting each contestant to one type of fabric with which to design a high-end resort wear piece, then by making them switch their fabric choices with another designer. But those shady dealings don't even touch the feud that's simmering between Kini and Sam. Hold onto your silk charmeuse caftans -- things are about to come to a boil in the workroom. |
