Morning Inspiration with Pastor Merritt

The real heart of the problem most of us have with the will of God is this – The real problem is not in finding God’s will, but the real problem is doing it. Mark Twain once made this great statement,
“It is not the parts of the Bible I don’t understand that give me trouble. It is the part that I do understand that gives me fits.”

I have found so often when people come to me struggling to find God’s will that when you really dig down deep, the problem is not finding it, but the problem is doing it.

Two questions are always involved in this quest for God’s will. One is our question and one is God’s. Our question is this one, “God, what do you want me to do?” His question is, “Will you do what I want you to do?” At this point, here is the game that we try to play with God. It is called “You go first.” We want God to tell us what He wants us to do first and then we will decide whether or not we want to do it. In other words, we don’t tend to look at the will of God as an obligation, but as an option. Here is the problem. God won’t go first. God’s light stays red until your light turns green.
There is one thing that any great attorney or even any good attorney will tell you never to do and that is you never sign a blank contract. A good lawyer will always tell you to read - what? The fine print. God’s will is the exception. God wants you to sign a blank contract and then He will fill in the details. Before God will agree to reveal His will for you in a certain situation, you have to first agree you are going to do it even if that means leaving your boyfriend, staying with your wife or husband, taking another job or even refusing another job.

This is important for this reason. You can only know God’s personal will if you are already following His practical or moral will. It is only when you are doing what you know you should be doing today that you can know God’s will for tomorrow. If you are being disobedient in some area of your life where you already know the word of God has plainly spoken, then you are not going to know His will for your life in any other area of your life.

Let me take the most sensitive area of our lives which are our finances. The Word of God plainly teaches that we are to give to God’s work. We are to support God’s church. In fact, His plan is pretty specific. We are to give a tithe of our income and we are to give it to the church. If you are not willing to follow God’s will for your life in that area why should He guide you in any other financial decision that you make? You will never know the unknown will of God for your life until you are doing the known will of God for your life.
