The Future's Where It's At: Disney's 2019 Line-Up Will Break All Box Office Records

If you're still debating which of the two movies with a superhero name and a colon in the title will smash the most box office records this year, you're already behind on the hype. Turning away from the duel between the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, it seems that neither last year nor this year will equal what Disney is expected to bring in in 2019.

Six Disney Movies Could Reach The 1 Billion Mark In 2019

This year has already got enough comic book movies scheduled to get our heads spinning, but even Deadpool will struggle to compare to the impressive line-up Disney has planned for 2019. Not only can we expect several superhero tales to be brought to the big screen, six releases could actually rake up a hefty $1 billion.

Have a look at these future box office winners, in chronological order:

1. 'Captain Marvel'

Release date: March 8, 2019

Although several superheroes have used the handle of Captain Marvel in the past, the adaptation that Disney is bringing to life is the story of Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. No director has been confirmed for the movie yet, but the Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur writer Meg LeFauve and the author of the first version of the Guardians of the Galaxy screenplay Nicole Perlman are already working on the script. As for the lead actress, we might not have to wait three years to see the incarnation of Captain Marvel, as she could already make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.

2. 'Avengers: Infinity War Part II'

Release date: May 3, 2019

Depending on the success of Captain America: Civil War's release in May, Infinity War could become a major box office breaker. The same writer duo behind Winter Soldier and Civil War, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, will be drafting the story inspired by Iron Man's vision in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. In the scene where Scarlet Witch invades his mind (below), he pictures a doomed world in which all of the Avengers have fallen.

3. 'The Incredibles 2'

Release date: June 21, 2019

The long awaited sequel to the Incredibles is finally coming, 15 years after the release of the heart-winning family superhero movie in 2004. With a production budget of $92 million, The Incredibles defied all expectations by grossing $631.4 million worldwide. While nothing has been revealed about the plot, it's good to know that the original director Brad Bird will be back on board.

4. 'Inhumans'

Release date: July 21, 2019


Inhumans is a slight exception to the list, as the project might shift to the year after due to its calendar clash with the new Indiana Jones. What's more, the author of the first draft of the script, Joe Robert Cole, has reportedly moved on to Black Panther. Still, a movie about the mutants who were introduced in the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would make for a strong contender at the box office if done right.

5. 'Indiana Jones V'

Release date: July 19, 2019

Harrison Ford will be back in his iconic role as Indiana Jones, confirming that there is no such thing as being too old for acting. Since the project was only recently announced, only a few details about the production have been disclosed. Kathleen Kennedy, the director of Lucasfilm, and her husband Frank Marshall — who worked on several Indiana Jones movies — will be executive producers of our favorite archeologist's new adventures.

6. 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

Release date: December 2019

Last but not least, the shooting of Star Wars: Episode VIII has not even wrapped yet, but we can already say Episode IX will make everyone's Christmas, including Disney's. With Episode VII having grossed $2.056 billion at the box office so far, it's safe to say that the last act of the new trilogy will meet, if not surpass, that number. The Episode VIII director Rian Johnson will write the script for Episode IX, while Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) will be behind the camera.

Last year was a solid year for Disney, in part because it owns Marvel Entertainment, but mostly thanks to the rebirth of the Star Wars saga. With remarkable successes for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Oscar-winning Inside Out, Disney's box office earnings worldwide reached an impressive $6.149 billion. However, it still came second after Universal Pictures, pulled by Jurassic World, Furious 7, Minions and Fifty Shades Of Grey.

As for 2016, 20th Century Fox is in the race with the record-breaking Deadpool as well as the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, while Warner Bros. prepares to release Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Meanwhile, Disney's major releases include Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange.
