Morning Inspiration with Pastor Merritt
His real name was Theodore Geisel. We would all know him better as Dr. Seuss, which was actually his middle name. It would be hard to find a parent, who at one time or another, has not exposed his or her child to the writings and the wit of Dr. Seuss. He had a way of communicating to children poetically that is unmatched and unparalleled. They always seemed to have some kind of a moral to them and this one is relevant to what we are talking about today.
“You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
In any direction you choose
You are on your own
And you know what you know
And you will be the guy
Who will decide where you will go
Oh – the places you will go.”
For the most part, Dr. Seuss was right except for one little line, in that poem, that we will come back to in a moment. Take a look at your life right now. Think about the places you have been. Think about the place where you are right now.Think about the places where you may go. You are who you are, what you are, and where you are right now for the most part, because of the one thing that Dr. Seuss talked about – the choices and the decisions that you have made, are making, or will make.
Life really is the sum total of the decisions that you make. If you went to college, what you majored in in college, who you married, the number of kids you had, what you do for a living, and where you live right now are all results of your choices and your decisions. Dr. Seuss is right on that count.
There is one thing he is wrong about. He is wrong about this line, “You are on your own and you know what you know.” If you are a Christ-follower you have a distinct advantage over unbelievers when it comes to making decisions. That advantage is called the “Will of God.” One of the greatest, most life-changing discoveries I made many years ago was the realization that God has a plan for my life. I have not been put here on this earth like a blind man, blind-folded in a dark room trying to feel my way around and hope I don’t bump into anything or fall flat on my face. In a world that is completely dark when it comes to knowing what is going to happen even in the next two minutes, I have a Heavenly Father, who wants to direct me and guide me and help me to make wise choices and decisions in my life. He does this by revealing His will to me.
