BECAUSE: The 2016 ESPYs were full of fun moments and legendary athletes, but they also had an important message. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul opened the show by acknowledging "the realities of the current state of America" and sending out a call to action:"The system is broken. The problems are not new, the violence is not new, and the racial divide is definitely not new. But the urgency to create change is at an all-time high." The sentiment was seconded in a stirring speech given by Zenobia Dobson. She accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage on behalf of her son Zaevion, who lost his life after stepping in front of two friends to protect them from gun fire. "All the athletes in this room, you have a lot of power," said his proud mother. "People look up to you -- I know Zaevion did. I urge you to think tonight about why he did, and what you can do tomorrow to prevent the next innocent young man or woman from being lost as well." |

WHAT HAPPENED: What happened in Elliot Alderson's missing three days when season 1's big hack finally went down? Where is Tyrell Wellick? These are all-important questions that you're not exactly getting answers to in Mr. Robot's season 2 premiere. Instead, there's a war at play -- two wars, actually. First, the one between Elliot and Mr. Robot. Until Elliot can keep Mr. Robot at bay, he can't trust himself. So he's sticking to routine: he lives with his mother now, he does daily chores, he watches pickup basketball games, and he eats meals with his friend Leon, who recently discovered Seinfeld (and it's really messing with him). But even routine can't keep away heated internal arguments with Mr. Robot and his hacker vigilante desires that end in temporary gunshot wounds to the head for Elliot, and even constant journaling can't help the fact that Elliot is still blacking out and losing time to Mr. Robot's dealings. Mr. Robot says they're the same person anyway. Elliot says, "Tell me where Tyrell is... or shoot me again. Because the only one who's going to drive mad is you, not me." |
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: Of course, the other war is between fsociety and Evil Corp. The results of the hack haven't exactly been Evil Corp's demise, and Darlene spends the premiere trying to hold fsociety's position, while Angela has seemingly gone completely to the side of Evil Corp under her new employment in their PR department. They need it, considering that Darlene made CEO Phillip Price publicly light $5 million on fire. Much like Elliot, Angela is also investing in repletion and structure to maintain her new identity, though she's doing it in the form of mindless sex and self-help tapes. "I love this aspect of her that's constantly trying to be in control of her mind and the toll that takes on your soul.... She's constantly trying to manipulate herself into being able to make these decisions," actress Portia Doubleday told EW. "Angela loves Elliot and Darlene and cares for them, but she's completely engaged in being able to create an identity for herself, and she'll go to any lengths to achieve that." It seems the wars have only just begun. |

WHAT HAPPENED: The season 6 premiere of Suits picks up right where season 5 left off, with Mike Ross officially entering Danbury Federal Correctional Institution and Pearson Specter Litt having just experienced a mass exodus. EW recapper Chancellor Agard makes sure to note, though, that even with its downer plots, the premiere's many humorous moments make it "the most enjoyable episode that the show has done in quite some time." While Jessica, Harvey, and Louis deal with the threat of every client who ever had Mike on a case suing their asses, Mike finds that he's not really cut out for prison, or perhaps prison isn't cut out for him given his smart-aleck remarks and trusting nature. Mike ends up recapping the first five seasons of Suits for his roommate only to discover that this guy Frank is not his roommate, but someone that Harvey put in jail 15 years ago. Now, he's looking for revenge. |
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: While having a built-in prison enemy who you just filled in on all your darkest secrets is decidedly not great, actor Patrick J. Adams sees Mike's time spent out of a suit and in his new prison blues a little more simply: "For me, the story of Suits is the story of Mike Ross becoming more and more mature and learning what kind of man he wants to be," Adams told The New York Times. "I think that if Mike can get out of prison having admitted what he's done and relieved himself from the burden of the secret he's been carrying, then he'll be a changed man and able to really move on with his life with his head held high." Okay, so then it's just the "getting out of prison" that'll be the tricky part. |

WHAT HAPPENED: "Sigh. Why can't humans and their aberrations simply get along?" laments EW recapper Shirley Li. As far as Wayward Pines goes, it's probably because the humans keep trying to shoot the aberrations off roofs. There are a number of huge plot twists at play in Wednesday's Wayward Pines:Rebecca is pregnant with Xander's child and hasn't told Theo; Kerry can never be pregnant with Jason's child and hasn't told him; and Jason's just discovered that Margaret killed Megan and escaped her captivity. And the hunt is on! As Margaret shows off her super-human (and even super-Abby) skills, Theo convinces Jason to fess up to the townspeople about the rising tide of Abbies, and Xander thinks it's a great idea to arm civilians with firearms. It is not. They do get a shot off on Margaret's arm before she retreats back beyond the fence, but Adam lets his opportunity to kill her pass, and retreats with her into the woods instead. |
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: As the humans continue to bicker -- although it should be noted that Jason actually apologized to Kerry for putting so much pressure on her after she told him that she's infertile -- the Abbies are only growing stronger. Margaret arrives back to her Abbies (her army?) and calms them into accepting Adam. Then they begin to nurse their queen's wounds. The fates of Margaret's wounds remain ambiguous at the episode's end, but as TV Guide said in their recap, "As we head toward the finale, it seems like we're onthe brink of full-on Abbie vs. human war. Is that a war that can be won?" they ask. "Doubtful. But as viewers, we can't lose." |
