Serena Williams made history Saturday by winning the Wimbledon singles final and claiming her 22nd career Grand Slam victory, tying Steffi Graf for the most ever in women’s tennis.
Williams beat Germany’s Angelique Kerber, 7-5, 6-3, falling backward to the Centre Court surface in delight after punching the match-winning volley.
"I had a couple of tries this year, I lost to two great opponents – one of them actually being Angelique," Williams said afterward. "It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it."
Kerber had defeated Williams in January’s Australian Open.
Williams, who has been the world’s No. 1 player for a career-record 178 consecutive weeks, has reached the final in seven of the past eight Grand Slams and on Saturday successfully defended her 2015 Wimbledon title.
Among those watching the match live in Williams’ block of seats were performers Beyonce and her husband, Jay Z, in town for a concert tour.
