Morning Inspiration with Pastor Merritt
What Jesus wanted that crowd He fed with a few loaves and fishes then and this crowd now to understand is there is more to life than the material just like there is more to you than your body. If you try to find security, significance, and satisfaction only in the material and the physical you are going to die a hungry person.
Jack Higgins, a highly successful writer, who wrote several best selling novels was asked one time after all of his success what he knew then that he would have liked to have known before he was successful. Here is what he said, “I wish had known that when you get to the top there is nothing there.”
The Prophet Isaiah asked a great question,
“Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink – even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk – it is all free! Why spend your money on bread that does not give you strength? Why pay for bread that does you no good? Listen and I will tell you where to get bread that is good for the soul.” (Isaiah 55:1-3, NLT)
Have you ever thought about getting what we want as part of daily life in our culture? We make satisfaction our number one goal. If we don’t like this television show we hit the remote button. If we don’t like this song on our iPod we hit the menu button. If the church stops meeting our needs we hit the change church button. We are bombarded every day with messages to upgrade, trade-in, and borrow it to buy it. Our economy thrives on perpetuating our own discontentment. As long as you look for security, and significance, and satisfaction in the material rather than the spiritual, you will never ever find it. As Bono puts it, “I still haven’t found what I am looking for.” You won’t until you look for the spiritual rather than the material.
