'The Big Bang Theory' Has Been Renewed For Two More Seasons

Now, of all the subjects that first hit the small screen back in 2007, the adventures of a quartet of nerdy scientists and their blonde neighbor didn't seem to be the most obvious candidate for longevity. After all, that same year saw the arrival of the likes of Gossip Girl, Californication and Damages (not to mention iCarly, fans of feeling super old), all shows that seemed likely to put Chuck Lorre's follow up to Two and a Half Men into the shade.

And yet, #TheBigBangTheory is still here, and all of those shows are not. What's more, it's so very much here, after 10 whole seasons of geekery-fueled whimsy, that:

Yup, that's right. #CBS has now officially renewed The Big Bang Theory for two more years of canned laughter, taking the show all the way through to its twelfth season, and 2019. What's more, it seems that the show's five original stars (Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg) have all renewed their contracts for that period, with later arrivals Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik expected to sign on in the near future. What's more, it seems likely that the show will spend at least some of that time on the air with its shiny new spin-off, #YoungSheldon, which will be heading our way next season.

The reason all of this is such a big deal? Well, for one thing, those two additional seasons will lift The Big Bang Theory into the very loftiest heights of the sitcom firmament, matching the 12-year runs of Two and Half Men and My Three Sons, while taking it past the 11-year runs of the legendary likes of Cheers, Frasier, M*A*S*H and The Jeffersons. Indeed, all that will be left ahead of it in the longest running (live-action) sitcom stakes will be the fitfully remembered The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and (if it even technically qualifies) The Jack Benny Program. And so, The Big Bang Theory will become one of the longest running shows of all time, and very much earn the right to be far more than a footnote in #TV history.

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, though, likely depends on how you feel about the show. After all, for every ardent fan who has helped the show to its lofty spot atop the ratings pyramid, you're likely to find five more folks who find the show absolutely intolerable.
