Emancipated
By Touching Lives
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” Romans 6:22
In the early 1930’s there was a boxer for Louisiana State University named C.D. “Big Boy” Blalock. He was 6’6” tall and a giant of a man. One match, he was taking on a short, stocky boxer from Mississippi State University. In the second round, Big Boy decided he would make short work of this kid and let loose with a roundhouse right punch. When he did, the Mississippi man stepped in and his head caught Big Boy’s arm inside of his elbow. This caused Big Boy’s arm to whip around in a full circle and connect with his own chin with full force. He staggered, grabbed the rope, and then fell flat in the ring and was totally knocked out. He became the only boxer in history who has ever knocked himself out with a right to his own jaw.
Too many Christians are losing the battle with sin on a daily basis. Even though we have been set free, we continue to live like slaves. Why do we keep knocking ourselves out and how can we stop doing so? Thankfully, the sixth chapter of Romans gives us the answer. I believe, especially if you are a believer trapped in a net of sin, this is one of the most transforming passages of Scripture you will ever read.
Some have described the book of Romans as the Emancipation Proclamation of the Bible. Three times in chapter six we read the words, “set free from sin.” There is so much to share on this subject that I am going to spend the rest of this week’s daily devotions on how we can win against sin. I hope that you will come back and take this journey with me.
This chapter of Scripture – Romans 6 – is so important. If you have turned from your sin and placed your trust in Christ, He is living in you and you are alive in Him. And if Christ lives in you, you have been set free from the power of sin. The presence of sin still surrounds us; but we do not have to yield to temptation. We can live a life free from sin’s power.
