In the United States, automotive diesel fuel and home heating oil are nearly identical, save for the red dye added to the heating oil to indicate it is for home use (and has not been taxed as an automotive fuel) and a slightly higher sulfur content in heating oil–but don’t go filling your car up with heating oil unless it is an emergency because the fines for using heating oil as automotive fuel can be extremely steep.
