How Sweet the Sound
By Touching Lives
“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Romans 1:19-20
There is no more recognizable Christian hymn than Amazing Grace. Written by John Newton, a slave trader, after his conversion in 1748, the lyrics proclaim that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of past sins.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.
Millions of people know every word of this famous chorus. But there is a question that must be addressed before we can truly understand grace, and that is the question of God. How do we know there is a God who can give us grace?
In Romans 1:19-20, the Apostle Paul answers this question. He simply says, “There is one powerful, divine Creator and everyone knows it because He has given undeniable evidence through the world and the universe.” In other words, God, who is invisible and unknowable, has made Himself both visible and knowable through what He has made. Look around. Take a walk in the woods or on the beach. Get up early and watch the sun rise or sit outside in the evening and watch it set. Hold a newborn baby. Watch a thunderstorm. We all know enough about God to be accountable just by being alive on the earth He created and sustains.
Every star is a billboard. Every sunrise is a neon sign. Every time the moon shines it is a megaphone screaming out that there is a Creator of this Universe. The problem is not that God has not spoken; the problem is we don’t listen. The problem is not that God has not given witness to Himself; the problem is that we reject the evidence. If you gaze into deep space through a telescope you will see the evidence of the glory and the power of a Creator. If you peer through a microscope you will see evidence of the incredible and incomparable brilliance and mind of a Creator.
Wherever you look, the witness of God is plain. To reject that witness can only hurt you. Have you experienced the Amazing Grace of your Creator?
