Nicolas Cage and Alice Kim, who got married nearly 12 years ago, have been separated since January, his rep confirmed to The Times on Friday.
The two started dating in February 2004 after meeting at an L.A. restaurant where she was a waitress. They were engaged two months later and said “I do” about four months after that, when she was 20 and he was 40. In October 2005 they welcomed a son, Kal-El.
A rocky moment in the estranged couple's relationship made headlines a few years back when they fought publicly on a street in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
Cage allegedly grabbed Kim by the upper arm and pulled her toward a house thought was their rental, a police spokesman said at the time. He was arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public intoxication, but was not prosecuted.
Kim was the actor’s third wife; Cage, now 52, was previously married to Patricia Arquette and Lisa Marie Presley.
