Unsolved Mysteries reboot lands at Netflix with Stranger Things producers

Unsolved Mysteries returns… again. Netflix is bringing a “modern take” on the classic, spine-tingling docuseries to subscribers with help from the producers of Stranger Things.
Terry Dunn Meurer and John Cosgrove, who co-created Unsolved Mysteries, are back for the reboot with Meurer showrunning and Cosgrove executive producing. Robert Wise will also serve as showrunner and co-executive producer, while Shawn Levy and Josh Barry of Stranger Things produce through their 21 Laps banner.
The streaming service promises to “maintain the chilling feeling viewers loved about the original, while also telling the stories through the lens of a premium Netflix documentary series.”
Robert Stack hosted Unsolved Mysteries from 1987 to 2002 as the program explored unsolved crimes, paranormal incidents, and conspiracy theories. The series primarily ran on NBC, but Spike picked it back up in 2008 with a new host, Dennis Farina.
The episodes started hitting streaming platforms in 2017 and now Netflix is developing 12 new ones that “will focus on one mystery and once again will look to viewers to help aid investigators in closing the book on long outstanding cases.”
Based on that surface-level description, this seems to be another step in Netflix’s exploration of interactive entertainment. The streaming platform released a batch of interactive children’s programming before dropping the choose-your-own-adventure-style Bandersnatch movie from Black Mirror. Fans of the original Unsolved Mysteries would submit tips for subject consideration and the show’s website remained open to receive them. Will Netflix push the envelope of interactivity further?
