The True Light
By Touching Lives
“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” John 1:9
Light is made up of little packets of energy called photons, which are produced when the atoms in an object heat up. Atoms gain extra energy when heated; and this extra energy is then released as a photon. The hotter an object gets, the more photons it gives out. Light travels as a wave. But unlike sound or water waves, it does not need any matter or material to carry its energy along. This means that light can travel through a vacuum – a completely airless space.
The first recorded words of Almighty God are found in Genesis 1:3. “Let there be light!” God proclaimed, and out of vast darkness light burst forth. In that one moment the earth went from formless and empty to bursting with energy and motion. That first proclamation of light set in motion the creation of all things. Light dispelled darkness, emptiness was filled, and there was life!
While it is God who spoke those first words, He was not alone in creation. Genesis 1:2 tells us that, “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Both John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:16 tell us that all things were created through Christ, who was with God in the beginning. All life was created by God’s words, through His Son, and by the power and presence of His Spirit. In Christ there has always been life, and that life is the light of men (John 1:4).
On one holy night, in a dark Bethlehem cave, God once again proclaimed, “Let there be light!” And just like on that first day of creation, light exploded through the vacuum of darkness. As the newborn cry filled the silent night, the dark shadows of hopelessness were swallowed up in light. “I am the light of the world,” Jesus said. “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life,” John 8:12. The long-awaited Savior has come…the True Light…here to give the light of life to all who will believe.
Father, Thank you so much for sending the light of Your Son to save me from my sins. Help me to shine the light of salvation wherever I go.
