"Skinemax" No More: HBO Exits Erotic Programming Space

The programming change has been in the works for the past year as HBO and Cinemax look for other late-night programming.

The days of "Skinemax" have come and gone.


HBO and corporate sibling network Cinemax have, over the past year, quietly exited the adult entertainment industry.

As first reported Tuesday by the Los Angeles Times, both premium cable networks have phased out content including Taxicab Confessions, Real Sex and Cathouse as well as other adult movies containing explicit content from its linear and on-demand platforms.

"Over the past several years HBO has been winding down its late-night adult fare. While we’re greatly ramping up our other original program offerings, there hasn’t been a strong demand for this kind of adult programming, perhaps because it’s easily available elsewhere,” the premium cable network said in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter.

The programming change comes after Sheila Nevins — the executive who championed the adult programming space as well as overseeing documentary films — departed the pay cabler in 2017.

HBO more recently has been investing in other late-night programming, including anthology Room 104 (which aired its first season on Fridays at 11:30 p.m.), adult animated comedy Animals (currently airing in the same slot) and Random Acts of Flyness (which runs Fridays at midnight). Scripted pot comedy High Maintenance also aired Fridays at 11 p.m., as did the first run of 2 Dope Queens and Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas.

Meanwhile, HBO's scripted porn drama The Deuce will return for its second season on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
