Career Hack
A stack of papers, an extra monitor, a wall of post-its—help! You have too much on your desk. Whether you realize it or not, your desk affects your mood and your mood affects your ability to focus. Here are some quick tips for getting your office space back in order.
Think of Your Desk As a Cockpit. Make your controls easily accessible to help you maximize your focus—be sure to put your seat in a comfortable position.
De-clutter. Look at your desk and ask yourself what items are really necessary. Pare down office supplies to only what you need or use daily, then store the rest out of sight. Find a bookshelf or cabinet space to tuck away bulky items like books or binders. Eliminate outdated or unused items.
Hide the Cords. You might be surprised at how much space you can save with this one simple trick: Use wire ties to hold all those computer-related cables up and out of sight. One of our colleagues uses double-sided Velcro tape to wrangle all the cables under her desk. Next, attach a small label or matching colored tabs at each end of each cord so you can unplug an item without removing the cable ties. The small plastic tabs used to keep bread bags closed work great for this.
File It. While you’re organizing you should prioritize as well. Start with file organizers and folders and put your important work in order of priority—current or most urgent files up front. You should also organize your desktop icons and emails into labelled folders to minimize space.
Change the Scenery. Scale down the number of personal items you have on your desk or, consider switching them out on a regular basis to give your space a fresh new look.
Purge Regularly. Block a half hour slot on your calendar once or twice a month to clean and rearrange your space. Wipe down screens, keyboards and phones and make any adjustments to your layout.
