Airbus is preparing to release its new A330-900neo aircraft into the skies.
Last week, the manufacturer finished “route proving flights” for the new long-haul twin-engine jet, Air Transport World reported. The tests included flights for both distance and condition, including cold weather above Kazakhstan, hot air above Mexico, and strong winds above Ireland.

Airbus is marketing its new aircraft as a fuel-efficient alternative to current planes. The “neo” stands for “new engine option.” Said new engine is a Rolls-Royce Trent 7000, designed to burn less fuel over longer distances. Sharklet wingtips increase lift and reduce drag, allowing the plane to fly with less effort.
Aside from the improved economics, passengers will notice a difference in the cabin of the A330-900neo. It is capable of carrying 287 passengers in a standard three-class configuration.
Airbus says the new plane has one of the calmest flying experiences yet. The cabin is quieter than earlier versions of the A330, minimizing noisy interruptions to sleep. The bathrooms have been redesigned with calming lighting, antibacterial surfaces, air fresheners and music piped in.
The plane is expected to enter service later this year with TAP Air Portugal. The airline has order 21 jets, with the first seven expected to join TAP’s fleet by the end of the year.

In the United States, you’ll be able to ride the A330-900neo next year. Delta has ordered 25 of the aircraft, expected to operate transatlantic routes and flights between the West Coast and Asia. Delta said the new aircraft will replace the Boeing 767-300ER and offer a 20 percent savings in operational costs per seat.
