After months of confident speculation, Danny Boyle has finally been set as the director for the next James Bond film. The Academy Award–winning filmmaker has long been the rumored front-runner for the job, all but confirming it last March when he said he was working on a 007 script with frequent collaborator John Hodge (Trainspotting). Now, just over two months later, the Bond brass at Eon Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios have decided to make the relationship official.
“We are delighted to announce that the exceptionally talented Danny Boyle will be directing Daniel Craig in his fifth outing as James Bond,” Eon’s Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement, per The New York Times.
The script will be penned by Hodge. Filming will begin in December. Bond 25 is set for an Oct. 25, 2019 release date in the U.K., followed by a Nov. 8, 2019 release date in North America.
This will be the fifth Bond outing for Craig, one of the most celebrated stars to play 007 in the franchise’s history. The very existence of a fifth film seemed a bit precarious just a few years ago, when Craig infamously said that he’d rather slit his wrists than tackle the role once again. And yet! He’s also one of the most successful Bonds in the lineup; Skyfall, the second-to-last franchise release, was the highest-grossing Bond film ever, earning $1.1 billion worldwide. Spectre, the most recent release, crept close to that mark, earning $880 million worldwide. And despite his crabby Spectre press tour, Craig eventually relented, ensuring that tomorrow would never die on the Bond empire. He confirmed his return to the series last August, indicating that this would be his final turn as 007: “I just want to go out on a high note,” he said. “I can’t wait.”
It’s taken a bit longer to confirm Boyle, but now we’ll finally see what his version of the 007 universe will look like. Previous films like Trainspotting and its sequel, T2 Trainspotting, have shown his keen sense of humor, while projects like Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours put his sprawling dramatic capabilities on full display. Boyle also gave fans a teeny taste of his 007 sensibilities back in 2012, with an Olympic Opening Ceremony bit that starred Craig (in Bond mode) alongside the one and only Queen Elizabeth II. Clearly, he’ll have to raise the stakes for a full-length Bond feature.
