Free As A Bird
By Touching Lives
“Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” Luke 12:24
Did you know that birds have a substance located just above their beaks called magnetite? It is a mineral the birds use to help them detect the Earth’s magnetic field. By doing this, they can navigate true north. This God-given ability, of course, is quite helpful during migration. The position of the sun in the sky, the North Star, and constellations also help migratory birds along their path.
Scientists call it “instinct,” but it is God who guides these birds. Are they even aware of it? Do the birds know how their Creator cares for them? We don’t know. But Scripture makes it clear in Luke 12:24 that there is a distinct difference between them and us. And if God cares so intentionally and precisely for them, how much more can we expect Him to care for us?
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Free as a bird?” When we look up and see birds soaring through the sky, flying wherever they please, it is easy to see where that phrase comes from. The truth is, however, that God intends for us to be much freer than birds. He created mankind in His own image, which means we have been given abilities that other creatures do not have. Among these are reason, a will, and the power to choose.
In a truer sense than any other created thing, we are called. We are called to intimately know our Creator. We have been given the capability to recognize His care for us. And in a much deeper sense than any bird, we are free. We are free to reject His call. We are free to deny His loving care. We are free to even deny His existence. But we are also free to embrace Him…to answer Yes.
I urge you today, amidst the noise of the world, to hear the loving call of your Creator. Will you answer yes or will you answer no? In His grace He has given you a choice. You are free to decide.
