“After they had heard the King, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.” Matthew 2:9
When the Wise Men arrived in Jerusalem, they found out through King Herod that Jesus – the King of the Jews they were searching for – had been born in Bethlehem. That was good news, because Bethlehem is only about 5 or 6 miles from Jerusalem so finding the city wouldn’t be any problem. But the Wise Men made a long trip for nothing unless the miraculous happened. The city of Bethlehem was large enough that they would have had to go door to door asking for information. How would they know which baby was the Messiah? The people of Bethlehem, like the people in Jerusalem, were clueless. Mary and Joseph were keeping a low profile. Would they even admit to foreign strangers who the baby was?
The Wise Men faced a daunting task at the end of their journey. The truth is, they could not do it with their own knowledge. They needed help. Thankfully, God provided the help they needed in the very star they had been following. This star went exactly to the house where Jesus was and it stops as if shining a spotlight. This was for sure no ordinary star. It had only one purpose – to go where Jesus was, so people could follow Him.
This is what makes the Star of Bethlehem so special…so important. The angels announced Christ’s birth to the shepherds. Miles away, there was another announcement to men quite different from the shepherds. God spoke to them in a way that would captivate them and draw them to Jesus. That Star invited them to come and worship; and they did. The Star reminds us that Jesus is more than the King of the Jews. He is the King of us all, if only we will come.
Father, Thank You for inviting me to worship Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
