Did You Know/Todays Term

Did You Know?

Although it is often repeated that the Great Wall of China is visible from space, the evidence of such visibility is scarce and, mathematically speaking, even in low Earth orbit a human being would require visual acuity of 20/3 (7.7 times better than normal) to see the Wall.

Today's Term

Free Space Optics

Free Space Optics (a.k.a. Open-Air Photonics, Optical Wireless, and Infrared Broadband) refers to the transmission of data from point-to-point or point-to-multipoint using low-powered infrared lasers.
The use of Free Space Optics does not require a government license for use of the spectrum, but does require a line of sight setup (with mirrors also being used sometimes to help properly redirect transmissions).
