How to Use Spotify with the Google Home
The Google Home’s default music provider is Google Play Music, but the device also supports Spotify. Here’s how to link your Spotify account to your Google Home to play all of the third-party music you’d ever want.
Just like Alexa, you can change the default music service. So, by simply saying “Ok Google, play The Weeknd”, it will automatically use Spotify to play music instead of Google Play. You can even tell Google Home to play a specific Spotify playlist. You can still use Google Play Music when you want—you just have to say “play Drake on Google Play Music”—it just won’t be the default. The same goes for Pandora as long as you have your Pandora account linked, or other services.
When you first set up your Google Home device, it asked you to select a music provider that you wanted to use, so if you chose Spotify then and linked your account, then you’re good to go, but if you stuck with the default and are now wanting to switch to Spotify, here’s how to get started.
First, open up the Google Home app on your smartphone and tap on the Devices button in the top-right corner of the screen.
Next, tap on the menu button in the upper-right corner.
Select “Settings”.
Tap on “Music”.
Choose “Spotify” from the list.
A pop-up will appear telling you to link your Spotify account to your Google account. Tap “Link Account”.
Tap on “Log In to Spotify”.
Enter in your username and password for Spotify (or select “Log In with Facebook” if you usually log in that way) and then hit “Log In”.
Tap “Okay” to confirm linking your Spotify account to your Google account.
Spotify will now be your Google Home’s default music provider. If at any time you want to unlink your Spotify account, simply tap on “Unlink”.
From now on, any music requests that you make to your Google Home will go through Spotify, and you can tell it to play your Spotify playlists without even saying “Spotify” at all. Simply saying “Ok Google, play my Christmas playlist” will tell the Google Home to search your Spotify library for that playlist and begin playing it.
