In 2013, scientists discovered an ancient Bald Cypress forest preserved on the ocean floor just off the coast of Alabama in the Gulf of Mexico—they believe the forest was uncovered as a result of Hurricane Katrina and the wood in the forest was so well preserved over the last 50,000 years under ocean sediments that it still smells like fresh cypress sap when cut.
