Netflix Data

Netflix Sort of Releases Some Ratings Data

The streamer says more than 8 million subscribers have watched at least one season of one series in 24 hours or less — and lists the top 20 shows they've binged.

Netflix on Tuesday morning released a few morsels of its much-speculated-over proprietary data, revealing that more than 8 million of its subscribers have a lot of free time on their hands.

That figure — 8.4 million, to be exact — represents the number of viewers who've watched at least one season of one Netflix original series within 24 hours of its release. It's a practice that the streamer says has been around since it started releasing its own series, but one that has gained steam and multiplied by twentyfold between 2013 and 2016.

Within the release, which is admittedly quite funny, Netflix notes that the most popular 24-hour binge completion was its 2016 Gilmore Girls revival. It also cites that there are five U.S. Netflix subscribers who've watched all of House of Cards' first five seasons within a day of their release. And Canadians apparently top Americans in their fondness for the 24-hour binge (their show of choice is, naturally, the northern comedy Trailer Park Boys).

“There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from being the first to finish a story — whether it's the final page of a book or the last climactic moments of your favorite TV show," said Netflix vp original series Brian Wright. “Netflix allows you to watch in a way you never could before, and there's nothing better than seeing a show engage our members and ignite a passion for viewing.”

It's not a whole lot of information, considering the mine of data that Netflix keeps locked away, but it does offer some insights into the kind of shows that are appointment viewing for the streamer. The list of "binge raced" shows skews towards half-hour comedies, though there are also more than a few dramas and one manga show.

Here are the top 20 Netflix originals with seasons watched within the first 24 hours:
