Fri Inspiration

Morning Inspiration with Pastor Merritt

In his magnificent book, "If God Is Good", Randy Alcorn astutely points out the circular reasoning used in stating the problem of evil. The assumption is that evil and an all-good, all-powerful, all-knowing God cannot coexist. There can be no valid reason that such a God would create such a world.

But Alcorn rightly notes this begs the question. What proof is there that this assumption is correct? How can a finite creature possibly have the perspective of an eternal Creator? Rather, we should affirm that if God exists, He knows far more than we do and is certainly capable of weaving even the seemingly most random unjust acts of suffering and violence into the tapestry of His sovereign purpose.

If God declares He has a morally sufficient reason for permitting evil it would in no way contradict His omnipotence, omniscience, or His loving kindness. God's ways and thoughts are far above ours. This fact alone should remind us of the limits of our logic and the restrictions of our reason. Just because we cannot see any purpose for evil and suffering does not mean no explanation exists.
