How to Stop Websites From Asking For Your Location

Modern web browsers allow websites to ask for your location through a prompt. If you’re tired of seeing these prompts, you can disable them and websites won’t be able to ask for your location anymore.

Websites that ask for your location usually allow you to plug in a zip code or address instead. You don’t need to provide precise access to your location via your web browser’s location services, so you likely won’t lose much functionality by turning this off.

Google Chrome

This feature is available in Chrome’s privacy settings. Click on Chrome’s menu  and head to Settings. Click the “Show advanced settings” link at the bottom of the Chrome Settings page and click the “Content Settings” button under Privacy.



Scroll down to the “Location” section and select “Do not allow any site to track your physical location”.



Mozilla Firefox

This setting is hidden in Firefox’s about:config screen. To access it, type about:config into Firefox’s address bar and press Enter.

The about:config screen contains a variety of advanced settings, and you can mess up your Firefox browser state by changing the wrong settings. Be careful when changing settings and only change settings if you know what you’re doing.

To acknowledge the warning, click “I accept the risk”.



Type geo.enabled into the Search box on the about:config screen. Double-click the “geo.enabled” preference that appears and Firefox will set it to “false”.

You can close the about:config tab afterwards.



Microsoft Edge

This feature isn’t available in Microsoft Edge itself. Like other new “Universal Windows Platform” apps, you must manage your location settings through the Settings app on Windows 10.

Head to Settings > Privacy > Location. Scroll down to the “Choose apps that can use your precise location” section and set Microsoft Edge to “Off”.



Internet Explorer

To disable this feature in Internet Explorer, click the tools menu and select “Internet Options”.

Click the “Privacy” tab at the top of the window and check the “Never allow websites to request your physical location” box. Click “OK” to save your changes.



Apple Safari

To do this in Safari, first click Safari > Preferences. Select the “Privacy” icon at the top of the window.

Under Website use of location services, select “Deny without prompting” to prevent all websites from asking to show your location.
