Fake Mobile Apps

Stay Cyber Savvy: Fake Mobile Apps

There’s an app for just about everything these days. As we become more dependent on our mobile devices to access the conveniences of the internet (online banking, online shopping, personal information storage, etc.), it’s important to remember that cybercriminals are ready to take advantage of us through our mobile devices.

Recently the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued an alert in regard to fake mobile apps that can cause serious harm.

How the Scam Works

Scammers use pop-up ads that mimic legitimate retailers and their brands to tout great deals. To get the great deal, you have to download an app. Beware! This could very well be a fake app that will allow the scammer to access to your personal information, install malicious software onto your mobile device, or even control your mobile device until you pay a ransom. Be cyber savvy, don’t take the bait!

Avoid Downloading Fake Apps

  • If you are unsure if an app is legitimate, go to the retailer’s website to investigate. If the app is legitimate, the website will guide you to where you can download it.
  • Conduct a search on the Internet to find out if the retailer has reported the app as “fake.”
  • Get reviews of the app on the Internet. If reviews are not available, it could be a red flag that the app is fake.
  • Don’t download apps that contain misspelled words.
  • If you use a shopping app, keep a record of all shopping transactions via a screenshot or save your receipt, product description, and price.
  • Review and monitor your credit card and bank account statements frequently, and look for charges that you did not make.
If you see a scam, please report it and make a claim to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
