Christmas Brings Freedom
By Touching Lives
“… To redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” Galatians 4:5
Although we don’t know the exact day Jesus Christ was born, we do know it was a day God planned before the world began. We learn in Galatians 4:4 that Christ’s birth was a “set time.” From the time God hung the first planet in space, lit up the sun, and put the first breath into a human being, He had this day in mind. On His calendar, this day was already marked, “Birth of Jesus.”
The world, unknowingly, had a divine appointment. And when God makes a promise, He is never early and He is never late – and He always shows up. For centuries the Jewish people had been waiting on the promised Messiah. And though they did not know it, they were waiting on a Savior – not an earthly king but a heavenly one. The universe was waiting on a Lord. And on that first Noel, the wait was finally over.
God sent a son and brought Him into the world through the womb of a woman, just like every other son and daughter. In other words, He became just like us – the Son of God was sent to be the Son of Man. For God Himself to come to planet Earth in human flesh exceeded all expectations. Christ came, “To redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship,” Galatians 4:5. “Those under the law,” includes all of us. And no one has ever perfectly obeyed the law. God calls this sin. It is foolish to think you can have a relationship with God by trying to keep His commands…by trying to stay under the law. It cannot be done. This is why we needed a Savior.
Sin puts us in debt to the God of the Universe. We owe God perfection, because God is perfect, but we are not perfect. We pile up a sin debt every day. James, the brother of Jesus, put it this way in James 2:10, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” When we break one command we have fallen short of perfection. Sin leaves us with a debt we cannot pay; and there is only one thing we need – redemption.
Jesus didn’t come at Christmas to just bail us out, but to pay our sin debt and free us from spiritual bondage once and for all. He perfectly kept God’s law. He didn’t owe a debt He couldn’t pay, so He paid a debt He didn’t owe for us. Because of this redemption, we can now enjoy spiritual freedom.
Father, Thank You for the freedom I have in Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
