Mattel to go fast and furious with live-action Hot Wheels movie

For toy companies and movie studios, this is what we call synergy. The live-action Hot Wheels movie is back making headlines this week as Mattel and Warner Bros. team up to finally make it a reality.
“We are excited to bring the thrill of a Hot Wheels live-action feature film to the big screen in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures,” Mattel Chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz said in a statement. “Mattel Films has great momentum as it continues to execute on our commitment to bring global audiences new ways to experience the brands they love as we transform Mattel into an IP-driven, high-performing toy company.”
Justin Lin, who helmed multiple Fast & Furious movies, was once attached to direct the project in 2016 for Legendary Pictures, though talk of a feature goes back to 2011. As reported by Variety, Legendary’s option expired and Mattel took back the rights to shop elsewhere.
This will mark the first ever live-action Hot Wheels movie, assuming it actually moves forward this time, but it will join the latest in a long line of toy properties expanding their IP with big-screen ventures. Mattel is also working on a live-action Barbie movie with Margot Robbie, the Transformers franchise continued with 2018’s Bumblebee spinoff, and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (and their accompanying LEGO sets) are coming this year. Other titles based on Playmobil and Monopoly are also in the works.
