Suicide Prevention

Suicide Prevention

If you believe that you are speaking to someone who may be suicidal, let them talk about their feelings. Listen carefully, allow the person to talk without interruption, and keep in mind the following information:

Your ActionHow
LookLOOK for signs such as: depression, sadness, hopelessness; feeling trapped; withdrawn and isolated; increase or decrease in sleep; sudden change in mood, more happy and calm; arranging and giving away personal items; visiting or calling to say goodbye.
ListenLISTEN for statements such as, "I'm in so much pain"; "I'd be better off dead"; "Everyone would be better off without me"; "There is no way out"
ThinkTHINK (Your thoughts): Is this person in immediate danger?; Does this person seek regular counseling?; What can I do to help?; Don't place judgment on the person
SaySAY (Your words): "This is your depression talking, not you. There is help available."; "You are going to get through this."; "Let's talk about the pain you are suffering from."; "Suicide is not a solution. You can get through this. Help is available."
If you believe someone is in immediate danger call 9-1-1
