Star Wars brings virtual Star Destroyers to global landmarks

From a galaxy far, far away to Central Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, and more

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s … a giant Star Destroyer and a couple of TIE Fighters!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi won’t hit theaters until December, but on Friday the franchise will launch Force Friday II, a major merchandising event unveiling all the cool new Star Wars toys and products. As part of the celebration, EW can exclusively reveal that Disney and Lucasfilm are rolling out a nifty augmented-reality campaign, using the Star Wars app to bring classic ships to major landmarks around the world.

There are 20 landmarks in all, and as of right now, if you open the free Star Wars app within a mile of any of them, you’ll see a giant Star Destroyer floating over your head as some TIE Fighters fly past.

Here’s the full list of locations:

—Central Park in the United States
—CN Tower in Canada
—The London Eye in the United Kingdom
—Copacabana Beach in Brazil
—The Eiffel Tower in France
—Gamla Stan in Sweden
—Golden Gate Bridge in the United States
—Gran Via in Spain
—Grand Canyon in the United States
—Ha’Penney Bridge in Ireland
—The Hollywood Sign in the United States
—Lumpini Park in Thailand
—Memorial de America Latina in Brazil
—Merlion Park in Singapore
—Niagara Falls in Canada
—Piazza del Duomo in Italy
—Schloss Charlottenburg in Germany
—Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia
—Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong
—Yoyogi Park in Japan

The Star Destroyers aren’t the only augmented-reality aspect of Force Friday. Earlier this week, Lucasfilm announced an AR scavenger hunt, whereby fans can visit more than 20,000 retail locations across 30 countries to unlock various Star Wars characters — including a never-before-seen character from The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theaters Dec. 15. For more on Force Friday II, head to starwars.com/findtheforce.
