Morning Inspiration with Pastor Merritt
There is a reason why Jesus uses the example of money, because money is a good picture of your talents. In fact, the Greek word “talenton” gives us the word for “talented or talents.” Your abilities, just like money, are to be invested:
“The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.”
(Matthew 25:16-18)
Two things stand out immediately. On the one hand, each servant had an equal opportunity to leverage his money, to invest his money, to get a return on his money. The other thing is there are only two kinds of servants in the story – faithful and unfaithful. To put it more bluntly there are only two kinds of servants in the story – faithful and foolish. I want you to think about how you are serving God right now – how you are serving God in this church – how you are serving God where you work – how you are serving God in your everyday life. I want to ask you a question. “Would you say you are faithful or would you say you are foolish?” Here is the truth of the matter. You are either doing something for God or you are doing nothing for God.
Notice that God expected, not the same results from every servant, but He did expect the same effort. This is something I need to hear. God never compares you with anyone else. God compares you with you. God measures your success by how much you do compared to what you could do. How much you are compared to what you could be.
