The Sun's limitless energy is all around us. We just need to harness it.


Many of the solar projects on this list are firsts, or perhaps the biggest of their kind. Although the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is a first of sorts—the first concentrating solar power plant with a central receiver tower—this project is on this list because it's the coolest-looking solar plant around. Its circular design with one central tower makes it look more like an archaic temple to a sun god—a fitting design for any solar power station.

Here in the United States, we need updated infrastructure, but we also need some forward-thinking ways to power it now and into the future. There are plenty of examples out there around the world, many of which are solar-powered. Here's a brief tour of the parts of a sun-driven future that are already here.


Longyangxia Dam Solar Park, China

Located in China's Qinghai province, this is officially the largest solar park in the world, stretching to about 27 square kilometers (or about 10 square miles). This park outputs a whooping 850MW of power. The second largest solar farm by output, India's Kamuthi Solar Power project, puts out nearly 200MW less. Although China is the world's largest polluter, this solar park shows that it can capture enough clean energy from the sun to power nearly 200,000 homes.

Cochin International Airport, India



This Indian airport, the seventh busiest in the country, is the first airport in the world to run completely off solar power. In fact, it's not only 100 percent clean energy, its solar farm actually gives back energy to the electrical grid. The solar project, located on what was a veritable wasteland near one of the airport's terminals, has been a years long project. Looks like this solar investment is finally paying off.

The Solar Star photovoltaic power station near Rosemund, California, isn't just the largest capacity solar park in the United States (and also the western hemisphere), it's also the largest solar installation in the country. It's spread over 13 square kilometers (or 5 square miles) and produces 579MW. The second largest U.S. solar farm, the Topaz Solar Farm, produces 550MW.

So much so that France has a plan to build entire solar roads that could provide up to 8 percent of the energy needs of the entire country. Japan is taking a similar approach, but instead applying the idea to water and creating the world's largest floating solar panel. It just goes to show that a small green energy project can have a huge impact.

Tokelau Renewable Energy Project, Tokelau



The pacific island of Tokelau, a relative speck of a country, is the first in the world to be completely solar powered. Built in 2012, this solar project provides all of the country's energy needs for its 1,500 residents spread across three atolls. The country was once 100 percent dependent on diesel fuel, but this solar project makes Tokelau completely diesel free. In fact, the project was so successful that the neighboring island of Ta'u, in the American Samoa, completed a similar project with SolarCity in 2016, preventing 2.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. These tiny islands will be the first major benefactors of a sun-only existence.

Of course not every solar revolution is a 21st century creation. The first satellite powered completely by solar cells was NASA's Vanguard 1 launched in 1958. To this day, it remains in orbit as the oldest man-made object in space. This small achievement sparked a trend of using solar energy for space vehicles, many of which have been solar powered for nearly 60 years.

Solar Impulse

Solar Impulse is the brainchild of Swiss engineer Andre Borschberg and Swiss aeronaut Bertrand Piccard. Its first flight began in December 2009, and the subsequent Solar Impulse 2 completed an entire journey around the world using just solar power in July 2016. Of course, the plane is little more than a proof of concept, but it shows that air travel is possible using just the power of the sun, leading to a possible future where airlines no longer pollute the skies.

Of course, Solar Impulse owes much of its legacy to other solar experiments like the MacCready Solar Challenger, which flew on solar power from France to England in 1981, as well as NASA's Helios project.

Arco Solar, California



This solar power station, created in the rush of increased research into alternative fuels after the 1973 oil crisis, was the world's first photovoltaic system to reach a 1-megawatt capacity in 1982. Although the first, it certainly wasn't the best, with Arco selling off the money-losing plants in 1990. However, these early plants were just the beginning of bigger and better solar farms that are slowly dotting the globe. It's a kind of alternative energy science race among nations, a race toward a goal that everyone can get behind.

 Which Oscars might the top film contenders take home?

Only three movies have won the best picture Oscar without their directors being nominated. And, yes, one of those rare occasions happened just four years ago when “Argo” took the Oscar in the time of the Great Ben Affleck Snub. But let’s be clear. It takes some pretty special circumstances — say, temporary insanity (“Driving Miss Daisy”) — for this to happen. 
That almost-ironclad stat helps streamline this year’s best picture race for predictions purposes. So long, farewell, “Lion,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures” and “Fences.” Remember: It’s an honor just to be nominated.
How do the chances look for the remaining five movies across the Oscars board? Let’s take a look, shall we …
“LA LA LAND”


Number of nominations: 14
Should win: Picture, director, lead actress, film editing, cinematography, production design, costume design, score, song, sound mixing
Could win: Original screenplay, sound editing
Analysis: With 14 nominations, “La La Land” winning best picture is a foregone conclusion. The suspense on Oscar night hinges on whether it can tie or best the record for most wins, 11, shared by “Titanic,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Ben-Hur.” (I’m guessing you understand that it’s the 1959 “Ben-Hur,” not the plodding 2016 remake.)
That’s a tall order. Though, to be clear, I’d rather watch “La La Land” for an eighth or ninth time than clear my afternoon for any one of those aforementioned, overlong epics. One challenge for “La La Land” is that because two of its nominations came in the original song category, at most, it can win 13. Ryan Gosling has always been a long shot for lead actor, a race that Casey Affleck has dominated and one that offers a towering alternative in Denzel Washington. And lead actress Emma Stone faces her own challenges in a category packed with powerful performances. Her SAG Awards win boosts her prospects.
Even die-hard fans of Damien Chazelle’s musical were a little taken aback when Chazelle won the Golden Globe for screenplay over the likes of Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”). If Chazelle manages to pull off an upset and win the original screenplay Oscar, then all bets are off. It could well be a historic night.
“MOONLIGHT”


Number of nominations: 8
Should win: Supporting actor, adapted screenplay
Could win: Director, cinematography
Analysis: From the moment it premiered at Telluride, “Moonlight” felt like the movie that America needed. It’s about seeing people different than yourself and understanding them, empathizing with them and connecting with them. Fundamentally, it’s about the necessity of human connection.
With eight Oscar nominations, “Moonlight’s” message obviously resonated with a broad swath of academy voters. Those who love “Moonlight” adore it in a way that makes them want to take the unconverted by the hand, lead them into a theater and then offer a handkerchief and a hug when it’s over.
There isn’t any precedent for a movie like “Moonlight” winning best picture. But then, has there ever been a movie like “Moonlight”? Its passionate fan base could well lead to an upset victory for Jenkins in the director category, though, more likely, he’ll come away with an Oscar for his superb screenplay.
“MANCHESTER BY THE SEA”


Number of nominations: 6
Should win: Lead actor, original screenplay
Could win: Other than the two cited, none
Analysis: Stories about the sexual harassment allegations in “Manchester” lead Casey Affleck’s past began appearing in earnest in November. (The charges were never proven, and the civil case was settled.) Nobody seemed to care. Then, after his Oscar nomination, “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu took to Twitter, calling on voters to pay attention to their role in condoning award recipients’ actions.
Some people started to care.
Whether the renewed media attention will sway any academy members’ minds is another matter. Affleck had won every acting prize leading up to the Oscars, until Denzel Washington took the SAG Awards honor Sunday. At the very least, the much-respected “Manchester” should come away with a win for the way writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s screenplay examined grief and the need for forgiveness.
“HACKSAW RIDGE”


Number of nominations: 6
Should win: Sound editing
Could win: Sound mixing
Analysis: Among “La La Land’s” competitors, the film possessing the elements that position it as a winner — key nominations for director and lead actor, as well as a handful of nods for crafts — is “Hacksaw.” Now, if it had just been directed by anyone but Mel Gibson …
But if this war drama had been made by anyone other than Gibson, it wouldn’t have been as good, as Gibson shoots battle scenes better than any other director working today. (We’ll see what Christopher Nolan has up his sleeve in “Dunkirk” later this year.) Gibson’s past still presents a problem for some people, though he clearly has many friends and supporters within the industry. Consider the six nominations as the win, with a possibility for an Oscar or two if “La La Land” doesn’t completely steamroll the competition.
“ARRIVAL”


Number of nominations: 8
Should win: None
Could win: Production design, cinematography
Analysis: The good news: Eight nominations! The bad news: All anyone wanted to talk about was the one nomination this sci-fi epic didn’t get — Amy Adams for lead actress. Moving forward, that’s a sign that even the movie’s skeletal squid aliens would understand without any help.

The gospel writers described the public ministry of Jesus as involving three things: teaching, preaching and healing. For three years, Jesus went about the countryside teaching what was right, preaching what was true, and healing what was wrong. This story begins with Jesus teaching and people hearing the Word of God. That is important since every journey of Jesus begins with hearing the Word of God.

Jesus was not teaching from the Bible like I am teaching from today, because in that day there was no Bible, at least not as we know it. Jesus was not teaching from a book. He was teaching from His heart. That phrase, “The Word of God” could also be translated “The Word From God.”

Every time Jesus opened His mouth you were hearing the Word of God. His teaching was the Word of God, because He was the God of the Word. John, who is in this story, would later write this:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

What was He teaching? Before this story, Luke records this in Luke 4:43.

“But he said to them, ‘I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.’” (Luke 4:43)

He was teaching them about the Kingdom of God. Light had come to the spiritually dark. Sight had come to the spiritually blind. Freedom had come to the spiritually captive.

The top ten deadliest diseases in the world all have one thing in common. Every one of them brings death from inside the body. Whether it is cancer, AIDS, Ebola, or Malaria, all kill from within. That is why when doctors want to examine the true health of someone they take blood, do X-rays, CAT Scans, MRIs, and other internal tests. In order to know if someone is healthy, doctors must look beyond outside appearances. They must examine what is on the inside. In other words, it is really what is inside of you that counts.
This is true not only physically but spiritually as well. It is true of both body and soul. This spiritual truth is illustrated in the life of King David of the Old Testament. Of all of his brothers, David was the least significant physically. His brothers were bigger, stronger, more successful, etc. From all appearances, the shepherd boy David was the least likely candidate to be Israel’s king.
And yet the LORD instructs Samuel – who was called by God to anoint the new King – to not consider outward appearances. Why? Because God doesn’t look at things the same way we do. People look at appearance, but God has x-ray vision. He is able to look beneath the surface to the heart of people. He is able to see not just what we look like, but who we are.
So what does it mean that God looks at the heart? The word, “heart,” in 1 Samuel 16:7 is the Hebrew word, lebab, and it means the innermost part of a person. The heart includes your mind, will, and understanding. It is the seat of your passions, thoughts, and emotions. Your heart is the very essence of who you are.
It is impossible to be spiritually healthy without a heart that is inhabited by the Holy Spirit. You can go to church every Sunday, read your Bible, tithe, and teach Sunday school. But if your heart has not been changed by the presence of the Holy Spirit in Christ, you are not a Christian. Moral behavior does not equal spiritual transformation. Just like the ten deadliest diseases in the world, sin kills from within.

“When [Joseph] heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth” (Matthew 2:22-23a NIV).
Today’s devotional is by Tom Holladay, teaching pastor at Saddleback Church.
A lot of people think living an obedient life of faith means putting your mind in neutral and letting God direct you wherever he wants as if you are a robot. That’s not it at all.
The Bible says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27a NIV). You’ve got to engage your brain with God and live out the kind of life he has for you to live.
This is what Joseph did when he obeyed God’s command to move back to Israel. Joseph heard that Herod’s son was reigning in Judea so he was afraid to go there.“Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth” (Matthew 2:22b-23a NIV).
Nazareth is where the Bible prophesied that Jesus was going to live, so Joseph was exactly in the center of God’s will. And he got there by looking at the situation — the politics, Herod’s son as ruler. He realized it wasn’t a safe place to be and engaged his mind with God to make the right decision.
So where should we get God’s command for our lives? We may not have angels showing up to guide us, but we do have hundreds and hundreds of pages of God’s Word. To live a life of obedience, we need to get to know what God has said to us.
Jesus talked about this in Matthew 7:24: “So then, anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock” (GNT).
We have God’s Word to help us live out a relationship with him. It’s not a dry book of directions. It is God’s love letter to us, a Father’s letter of instruction to show us how to live the kind of life he wants to give us.
As you read God’s Word, I encourage you to pray Psalm 119:34: “Give me insight so I can do what you tell me — my whole life one long, obedient response” (MSG).

Today’s devotional is by Tom Holladay, teaching pastor at Saddleback Church.
This week, as we think about obedience and how to live it out, I want to look at five actions Joseph took that showed his obedience to God.
When the angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, he told Joseph, “Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit”(Matthew 1:20b NIV). So that’s what Joseph did: “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife” (Matthew 1:24 NIV). He didn’t hesitate. He just did it!
There is a refreshing immediacy to Joseph’s relationship with God. When God said it, Joseph did it.
If you believe God loves you and you want to live a life of obedience in response to his love, then this how you should respond. Living in immediate obedience to God is a kind of life that breathes with excitement and joy.
I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of great men and women of faith from around the world. They are all different from each other, but they all have one thing in common: When they sense God saying to do something, they don’t hesitate. They step out and do it.
The Bible says in 1 John 5:3“This is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” (NIV). So if something God asks you to do feels like a burden, what’s wrong? Usually it’s procrastination. When we don’t act right away, it becomes harder to do the longer we wait. But when we do what God says, the most refreshing freedom will come into our lives.

Install macOS in VirtualBox on W10

How to Install macOS Sierra in VirtualBox on Windows 10

Whether you want to occasionally test a website in Safari, or try out a little bit of software in the Mac environment, having access to the latest version of macOS in a virtual machine is useful. Unfortunately, you’re not really supposed to do this—so getting macOS running in VirtualBox is, to say the least, tricky.
It’s not impossible, however. Some of the folks at the InsanelyMac forums have figured out a process that works. The only thing not working is sound, which for some reason is highly distorted or nonexistent. Other than that, though, this is macOS Sierra, running smoothly in VirtualBox.
To make things a little easier for people, we’ve combined methods from a few different forum threads into a single, step-by-step tutorial, complete with screenshots. Let’s dive in.
NOTE: In order to get this working, you will need access to a real Mac in order to download Sierra. You could, we suppose, obtain a Sierra ISO by other means, but we don’t recommend it. Borrow a friend’s Mac for an hour if you don’t have one, and you should be fine—everything beyond step one of this tutorial can be done on your Windows PC.

Step One: Create a macOS Sierra ISO File

To start, we’ll need to create an ISO file of macOS Sierra’s installer, so we can load it in VirtualBox on our Windows machine. Grab your borrowed Mac, head to the Mac App Store, search for Sierra, and click “Download.”

When the process is done, the installer will launch—that’s okay, just close it. We don’t want to upgrade your friend’s Mac; we just need the downloaded files.
To convert those files to an ISO, we’ll need to use the Terminal, which you can find in Applications > Utilities.
First, paste this command into the Terminal and press Enter:
hdiutil attach /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg -noverify -nobrowse -mountpoint /Volumes/install_app
This will mount the bootable part of the installer you just downloaded as a virtual disk on the Mac.

Next, run the following command to create a blank disk image:
hdiutil create -o /tmp/Sierra.cdr -size 7316m -layout SPUD -fs HFS+J
Then, mount your blank image:
hdiutil attach /tmp/Sierra.cdr.dmg -noverify -nobrowse -mountpoint /Volumes/install_build
Now we’re going to restore BaseSystem.dmg from our mounted installer over to our now-mounted image:
asr restore -source /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.dmg -target /Volumes/install_build -noprompt -noverify -erase
Note that, after doing this, the name of our destination mount point has changed to “OS\ X\ Base\ System/System,” which we’ll see as we remove some unnecessary files from this newly-restored drive:
rm /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation/Packages
Next, let’s copy over a few more files we need:
cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/Packages /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation/
cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.chunklist /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/BaseSystem.chunklist
cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.dmg /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/BaseSystem.dmg
You’re almost done! Unmount the two images:
hdiutil detach /Volumes/install_app
hdiutil detach /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System
And, finally, convert the image you created into an ISO file:
hdiutil convert /tmp/Sierra.cdr.dmg -format UDTO -o /tmp/Sierra.iso
Move the ISO to the desktop:
mv /tmp/Sierra.iso.cdr ~/Desktop/Sierra.iso
And you’ve got a bootable Sierra ISO file!

Copy it to your Windows machine using a large flash drive, an external hard drive, or over your local network.

Step Two: Create Your Virtual Machine in VirtualBox

Next, head to your Windows machine, and install Virtualbox if you haven’t already, making sure you have the latest version.
Open it up and click the “New” button. Name your Virtual Machine “macOS Sierra,” and choose “Mac OS X” for the operating system and “Mac OS X (64-bit)” for the version (as of this writing, “macOS Sierra” is not offered, but that’s fine.)

Continue through the process. For memory, we recommend you use at least 4096MB, though you can opt for more if you have enough RAM to spare on your Windows machine.

Next, you’ll be asked about your hard drive. Choose “Create a Virtual Hard Disk Now” and click Create.

Choose VDI for hard disk type and click Next. You’ll be asked if you want a dynamically sized drive or fixed. We recommend Fixed Size, since it’s a bit faster, though it’ll take up a bit more hard drive space on your Windows machine.

Click Next. You’ll be asked how big a drive you want; we recommend at least 25GB, which is big enough for the OS and a few applications. Depending on your storage situation, you could offer more, but we don’t think you can really use much less than that.
Click through the prompts, and you’ve created an entry for your virtual machine! Now it’s time to do a little configuration.

Step Three: Configure Your Virtual Machine in VirtualBox

You should see your virtual machine in VirtualBox’s main window.

Select it, then click the big yellow “Settings” button. First, head to “System” in the left sidebar. On the Motherboard tab, make sure that “Floppy” is unchecked.

Next head to the “Processor” tab, and make sure you have at least two CPUs allocated to the virtual machine.

Next, click “Display” in the left sidebar, and make sure Video Memory is set to 128MB.

Next, click “Storage” in the left sidebar, then click the “Empty” CD drive. Click the CD icon at the top right, then browse to the ISO file you created before.

Be sure to click “OK” to finalize all the changes you’ve made, then close VirtualBox. No, seriously: close VirtualBox now, or the next steps won’t work.

Step Four: Configure Your Virtual Machine From The Command Prompt

We’ve done a few tweaks, but we need to make a few more more in order to convince the operating system it’s running on a real Mac. Sadly, there are no options for this from VirtualBox’s interface, so you’ll need to open the Command Prompt.
Right-click on the Start menu and choose “Command Prompt (Admin).”

That’s it! If everything worked, you shouldn’t see any feedback; the commands will simply run. Go ahead and close the Command Prompt. We’re heading back to VirtualBox now.

Step Five: Install macOS Sierra in Your Virtual Machine

Re-open VirtualBox, click your Sierra machine, then click “Start.” Your machine will start to boot. You will see a lot of superfluous information as this happens—and I mean a lot—but don’t worry about it. It’s normal, even some of the things that look like errors.
You should only worry if a specific error hangs for five minutes or more. Just walk away and let it run for a bit. If you’ve done everything right, it’ll boot.

Eventually, you’ll see the installer asking you to pick a language:

Pick “English,” or whatever language you prefer, then click “Next.” Before you do anything else, however, click “Utilities” in the menu bar, then click “Disk Utility.”

Click the drive labeled “VBOX HARDDISK,” then click “Erase.”

Name the drive “Macintosh HD,” and leave the other two settings as-is (“Mac OS Extended Journaled” and “GUID Partition Map”.) Click “Erase,” then close Disk Utility when the process is complete.
Back in the installer, click “Next”, then click “Macintosh HD” when asked which drive you want to use.

The installation will begin! This might take a while, so be patient. Eventually you’ll be re-booted into macOS. If that doesn’t happen, try ejecting the ISO from the Virtual Machine. When Sierra does boot, you’ll need to go through choosing your country, time zone, and the rest of the initial setup process.

Eventually, you’ll make it to the Mac desktop. Yay!

You can now try out any Mac software, though some functions, like FaceTime and Messages, won’t work because Apple won’t recognize your computer as a real Mac. But a lot of the basic stuff should work. Have fun!

Step Six (Optional): Change Your Resolution

By default, your virtual machine will have a resolution of 1024×768, which is not a lot of room to work with. If you try to change the resolution from within macOS, however, you will see no option to do so. Instead, you need to enter a few commands.
Shut down your Virtual Machine by shutting down macOS: click the Apple in the menu bar, then click “Shut Down.” Next, close VirtualBox entirely (seriously, this step will not work if VirtualBox is still open!) and head back to Windows’ Command Prompt as an admin. You need to run the following two commands:

In the second command, you need to replace the “N” with a number from one to five, depending on what resolution you want:
  • 1 gives you a resolution of 800×600
  • 2 gives you a resolution of 1024×768
  • 3 gives you a resolution of 1280×1024
  • 4 gives you a resolution of 1440×900
  • 5 gives you a resolution of 1920×1200
Start up VirtualBox, load up your virtual machine, and it should boot to your preferred resolution!
From now on, you can open VirtualBox for any Mac-related testing you want to do. Again, you’ll see a lot of errors pop up during boot, but they’re fine; ignore them. Also, remember that audio won’t work, nor will things like FaceTime that require a real Mac. This isn’t going to be perfect, which is to be expected from an entirely unsupported setup. Today, we take extremely sophisticated encryption for granted. Millennia ago, however, encryption was a decidedly simpler affair.
One of the earliest and best known examples of encryption is the shift cipher, used by Julius Caesar, famed Roman statesman and general. In fact, the shift cipher is so closely associated with Caesar that it is often referred to as the “Caesar Cipher”. He used this cipher to send sensitive military messages.
As the name “shift cipher” implies, the cipher was simply a transposition of letters with their neighbors a certain number of spaces away. Imagine, if you will, that you wrote out all the letters of the alphabet on two strips of paper and then lined them up so that A was above A, B was above B, and so forth. This would be a zero shift cipher, because there would be no change in the cipher from the regular use of the alphabet. Now imagine that you slid the lower strip of paper three letters to the right out of alignment with the top strip (cutting off the floating letters at the end and bringing them to the front). A becomes X, B becomes Y, C becomes Z, and D, having picked up the first letter of the alphabet due to the three space shift, is now A.
It’s worth noting that this method is not the same as other ciphers (where every letter may be reassigned to a new, relatively random letter and A might be Z, but B might be V). A shift cipher is always applied like a slide rule, wherein the letters are simply realigned in their same order. In this way, the recipient doesn’t need to possess a decryption table with your substitution cipher on it, they simply need to know what the “shift number” is.
Now, by modern standards, that level of encryption is laughable and could be cracked by a child with even the most passing familiarity with secret decoder rings or a Boy Scout manual. But when encryption was in its absolute infancy, Caesar’s cryptographic trick was more than sufficient to secure his communications. In fact, such simple ciphers remained in use until the advent of sophisticated mechanical cipher machines in the 20th century—in the photo shown here, we see a cipher disc used by the Confederate army in the mid-19th century using the same shift cipher employed by Julius Caesar almost two millennia earlier.
